Sir Reginald Wingate was one of Dunbar’s most famous residents. His military career was legendary. He was at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, and succeeded Lord Kitchener as Sirdar (British Commander in Chief of the Egyptian Army), as Governor General of the Sudan, and later as High Commissioner of Egypt. He built Knockenhair House in 1908 and later lived there until his death in 1953. He was buried in the Parish Churchyard with full military honours.
His memorial stone had recently fallen into disrepair. It has been re-set on its foundations by ELC. The memorial itself has been cleaned and the lettering restored by Robertson Memorials of Dunbar. Funds for the restoration were raised by Stephen Bunyan from the Royal Artillery Council and Dunbar Community Council.
